Urinary Tract Infections During Pregnancy

If you experience burning while you urinate or feel a constant urge to urinate (even if you've just gone to the bathroom), you could be suffering from a urinary tract infection.

If it turns out that you do, in fact, have a urinary tract infection, your doctor will treat the infection with an antibiotic such as ampicillin, amoxicillin or sulfamethoxazole/trimepthoprim, all of which are thought to be safe during pregnancy. Because UTIs tend to recur, you'll need to have your urine checked at regular intervals throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.

You may be able to keep urinary tract infections at bay by consuming one to two cups of cranberry juice each day. Studies have shown that cranberry juice helps reduce the number of bacteria in urine and may actually prevent the bacteria from sticking to cells in the bladder.

There is also another way to get the cranberries to maintain healthy urinary tract instead of consuming cranberry juice if you don't like the taste or amount of sugar. Natural food stores and drug stores sell cranberry supplements that my doctor told me are also safe to take during pregnancy. They are basically just crushed dried cranberries in a capsule.
