Baby Milestones: First Social Smiles, Scooching and More

Remember all those baby toys you got as gifts? Bring 'em on out! In the coming months, your baby will love checking out some new sounds and textures. (And you'll love to start clearing out some of the packages cluttering the floor in your living room ... and bedroom ... and hallway ...)
What You're Thinking: "Why do I still look five months pregnant when my baby's 5 weeks old?"

Baby Milestones

  • Your baby's vision is developing and she needs stimulation to help it along. Try getting her to "track" or follow an object in her field of view. This is when that huge basket of toys in the living room finally starts to come in handy.
  • Your baby is getting stronger now, lifting her head more and turning it from side to side. She's probably even scooting across her crib from one side to the other. She's not crawling, she's scooching, and it definitely counts as movement—particularly when she's on the changing table, so be sure not to leave her unattended!
  • Apparently, your jokes are getting better. If you're really good, your baby may give you a responsive baby smile, called a "social smile" now—and it's not just gas anymore. Get into it! Sing her songs, play with her, teach her the Electric Slide ... all to encourage this baby milestone.

Mommy Milestones

  • You openly declare your unabashed love for the bouncy seat. (How could you not adore something that gives your arms a break and keeps baby content?)
  • You figured out how to use the baby sling without looking like you're performing a Houdini stunt.
  • You enjoyed sushi and a glass of sauvignon blanc (albeit in the living room in front of the TV with spit-up on your sweats, but who cares!).
  • You don't know your baby's favorite lullaby yet, but when it comes to getting you to sleep, even the hum of the dishwasher will do the trick.
  • You tried on a pair of pre-preggers jeans only to find they wouldn't budge past your thighs. Give it time, Mama, give it time.
  • You didn't call the pediatrician today with a question (OK, maybe you did—but it was a very quick question).

"Gripe water" (a blend of ginger and fennel) works great on fussy babes.  Its been around since the Middle Ages at least and works in a natural , non-medicated , way.  Just make sure your baby isn't allergic to anything in it.  I found out that what I thought was just "fussiness" in my daughter is actually due to acid reflux.  My pediatrician had recommended a low-dose of Zantac...and acid reducer....to help with her horrible bouts of agony.  It helped a great deal.  She now can sleep better (and me too) and is gaining more weight.  Don't ever think that a fussy baby is just colicky.  Check with a pediatrician first.  Babies usually don't fuss unless they have a reason...the frustrating part is figuring out what that is.

To help your crying baby you should try colic calm...it has like ginger and peppermint and a bunch of natural stuff to help his tummy and also try a warm compress...My son gets really fussy at night too and those two things work for me! I hope it helps you too :)

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby crying...I know some remedy....

I am Filipino and we have what we call a  ACEITE  MANZANILLA. We sell it at any Filipino Sote. get some and rub it on your baby's tummy, back, his feet and his head. Wrap a blanket around him, swaddle and right away he burps, farts and goes to sleep. I wish you will find a Filipino store close to where you live. Take care and give your baby a kiss from me.

My son is ALWAYS fussy. Well, mostly at night. Almost nothing gives me gas, but almost everything I eat gives him gas. He cries in pain every night because his tummy hurts. I can tell because he tightens his tummy and lets out an angry painful cry. The ped just said burp him better. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink. He ALWAYS gets gassy at night. I burp him very good, tried bicycling his legs, pelvic rotations, mylicon. and little tummies. I give up. I guess I have to wait until he grows out of it. I just hate to see him in pain.
