Biography

Dr. Mercedes Niño-Murcia is a professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese and international studies at the University of Iowa. Her research specializing in the area of sociolinguistics has carried her around the world, with a special focus on Latin America—garnering her the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Award to conduct a group research project in Paraguay in 2003. A native of Colombia, South America, she herself raised her son in two languages while studying, living and working in the United States.
