Biography

Cynthia Stevens Graubart & Catherine Fliegel, R.N.

Dubbed "Family Culinary Experts," Cynthia Stevens Graubart and Catherine Fliegel, RN, are the authors of The One-Armed Cook: Quick and Easy Recipes, Smart Meal Plans, and Savvy Advice for New (and not-so-new) Moms, published by Meredith Books. They write for parenting and cooking publications (BabyTalk, American Baby, Cooking Smart), parenting websites (ParentsConnect.com, RealSavvyMoms.com, ClubMom.com) and have appeared on more than 100 television and radio programs nationwide. Cynthia and Catherine are passionate about sharing delicious recipes and do-ahead strategies and teaching the tricks and techniques that help parents make family mealtime a priority by spending less time in the kitchen and more time at the family dinner table.

Culinary skills were few where Cynthia Stevens Graubart grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. Both her mother and grandmother looked upon cooking as a chore, so Cynthia learned to cook simple meals of spaghetti, meatloaf, and can-of-soup casseroles in self-defense, each ready to be served when Mom came home from work.

After majoring in Journalism at the University of Georgia, the culinary world opened up for her when she began producing Nathalie Dupree's first television series for Public Television, New Southern Cooking. Based on her experience leaving her career to be a stay at home mom, she knew she had the makings of a book to help new parents navigate these rough waters in the early months and years of parenting and cooking with a baby on your hip.

Cynthia is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) and lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and their two children.

Catherine Fliegel grew up in the kitchens of her mother and grandmother in Medina, New York, a small farming community near Buffalo. Their example of cooking, tempered by instinct and love, taught her from a very early age that food was a personal expression of self and of love for others.

After graduating from the University of Rochester School of Nursing, Catherine specialized in OB/GYN and Oncology, and later became certified to teach prepared childbirth classes and mother-baby classes. Catherine brings to her audiences her unique perspective, drawn from her professional experiences in nursing and parenting education, along with her love of cooking and motherhood experiences in the kitchen.

Catherine is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), and earned the honor of being a prep cook for Julia Child and Burt Wolf for their 2000 national public television special, An American Feast. She lives in the New York City area with her husband and three children.
