12 Tips for Traveling During Pregnancy

Got an out-of-town wedding, going on a "babymoon" or are you due for your yearly visit to your mother-in-law's house? Try these traveling tips.

Talk to your doc before you go—just to make sure you have the go-ahead. And bring a copy of your prenatal records just in case.

Check into medical-insurance coverage for wherever you're going. Make sure you're covered in Paris, France, as well as Paris, Texas!

Request the front seat on an airplane. It's closer to the bathroom.

Drink lots of water. Then see no. 3.

Dress in layers. Hot, cold, off, on—you get the picture.

Wear comfy shoes (like maybe some gorgeous ballet flats). Travel can cause big swollen feet. Pretty!

If possible, travel during your second trimester so you don't have to worry about morning sickness or being as big as a house.

Keep your luggage light. No need to carry a heavy bag when all you'll need is a water bottle, a trashy mag and some food.

Speaking of food, bring lots of snacks. Fruit. Nuts. Whole-grain crackers. A box of chocolate.

Take your favorite pillow.

Avoid leg cramps by taking a short walk every two hours.

Consider buying some special pregnancy socks to keep down the swelling.

There aren't too many vacation destinations that are child friendly. Me and my wife were lucky to find a few villas in France where the nanny service was part of the vacation package. I must admit that this is quite a catchy marketing strategy because many couples would like to be able to get some time for their own and actually get to enjoy their vacation while still caring for their young ones.
