Your Crybaby Soothing Tips
report abuse
I am very thankful for this thread. My son cries A LOT, well mostly fusses, and I NEVER know what to do. I think it's just the fact that he gets bored easily. I just have to constantly change what he is doing.

I love The Happiest Baby On The Block. The 4th trimester concept makes so much sense. We turned on a box fan then bought a sound machine. We keep it set on ocean waves and it works like a dream. We also found a portable sleep machine at sleepybees.com. It lets us take the comforting sounds with us.

My first child is only a week old. If it's not formula or need of a diaper change, we do three things: 1) Try the vibrator on his bassinet; 2) Turn on Pandora.com (kid loves celtic rock); and/or 3) Give him the pacifier. If he's still fussing after all that, we either pick him up and hold him or just leave him be till he calms down (usually pick him up).
It works.

Can you say "VACUUM"??
HaHa! Whenever my little girl is in her crib in her room and won't go to sleep I just vacuum my livingroom and the sound immediately stops her jabbering/fussing and she will go to sleep!! Her room is upstairs so the sounds aren' too loud to her... She's 16mos old and it's STILL working...
GO FIGURE!!
If you're about to lose your mind, DEFINATELY worth a try! ;o)

When my son is crying I just carry him outside and he immediately stops. Or if I can't get him outside I turn on the water at the sink and stand near it. He has always stopped crying when I do either of these two things!

Talking to them in a high pitched, excited voice right when their face says "I'm about to cry" helps a lot! My daughter stops making the face and hardly ever starts to cry when I do that. You have to catch them before they start! Utilize the cues! :-P

We have a huge salt water fish tank in our 5 month old daughters room. It was not something we could move so when we found out we were pregnant, we planned on an ocean theme! She can be screaming her lungs out and the second we bring her to the tank she is silent and just stares, it works everytime.

Walking works well for me. I hold my baby in a firm, reassuring snuggle and either walk up and down the hallway a few times or up the street and back if it's daytime. I think the rocking motion when you walk must mimic the rocking they felt when they were in the womb and mama was walking around. OR I hold her and put my legs out wide and bob my body up and down. There are so many good ideas on this page :)

We rented the DVD of "Happiest Baby on the Block" from our local library. It's been a lifesaver! Not everything on it works for our baby, but rocking, shushing and swaddling all at the same time does the trick. Funny thing is, she HATES being swaddled (hates having her arms immobile) unless she's also being rocked/shushed.

For some crazy reason, when our baby is screaming, picking her up under her armpits and slowly lifting her up and down or bouncing on our laps quiets her in seconds. It's almost like an off switch!

I don't have my own baby for another few months, but when I watch my baby cousin and he starts shrieking for no reason I put him on the floor next to my (REALLY NICE) old dog and she doesn't like it when he screams so she licks his face, of course this shocks him out of crying for a moment and then totally cracks him up! my dog then goes back to sleep, like, my work here is done. [; Obviously this probably won't work for everyone.

My little boy can be screaming his head off and as soon as i put him in his bed with the vibrate attachment, he falls right asleep. he loves it!

I sing to my son when i really can't calm him down. I sang and listned to music really loud while i was prego so I think it's something he just knows so he calms down. He makes me feel like I'm the next American Idol..lol

Hmm i'll admit i have screamed shhhh my baby but i never thought to whisper to my baby!! I will certainly try it. Who really wants to scream at the love of their life!! Not me!
I have to try some of these.

my son would cry cause of his formula so what i would do is rock him back and forth infront of the exhaust fan on my microwave and it would calm him down better then the vaccume cause he is afraid of it.

I strongly recommend "The Happiest Baby on The Block" book and DVD-it talks about how after your baby is born, there is a 4th and 5th trimester. In addition, they suggest that since there is white noise like a continuous "SSSSHHHHHHHH" noise in the womb to swaddle your baby really tightly and lean over and make the "SSSSHHHHH" noise in their ear. It gives them the comfort they had in the womb....it's been working for us when she gets fussy and we're out of ideas what's wrong---most times it puts her right to sleep!
I give my daughter a bath. She loves the water. I play with her a little. I soap her up. Than I clean her up, lather her in lotion, dress her in warm clothes. I feed her and at the end of it all, she falls asleep.
If you have a pet that has been already been introduced to your baby, bring 'em on!! Usually it's a distraction and entertainment enough to stop the crying.
If you find yourself at your wits' end. Place the baby down in a safe place such as a crib and walk away for a few minutes until you collect yourself. There are too many horror stories about "shaken baby syndrome" where parents are so completely frustrated they don't realize what they have done. It's so harmful. It's awful writing this, but it's so important to just place your baby's health and safety above all else.
I used to go for drives, go outside and let the baby look at the leaves, touch the grass, smell the flowers.
Oh here's a good one: HAND HER OVER TO YOUR PARTNER! AND say, "see ya later!" and RUN!!!!! :)
