I posted this originally in response to the Jump Arounds ads on Noggin and now I see that despite all our protests they've brought them back again and now under a new name. I don't know what this is about but I still have the same BIG issues
Hello all! I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to address this but I have a serious issue with the Jump Arounds/ Fresh Beat Band ads they've been showing on Noggin, and it's not the snarky complaints I've seen on the other boards
I have a 2 year old and Noggin is grea - no ads and great age-based,imagination play shows but part of the reason we watch this channel is (was) the lack of progamming like the Jump-Arounds/ Fresh Beat Band. This show with it's pre-teen jumping and dancing reinforces so many of the negative stereotypes and ideas that work to keep my child away from. Cheesey, too thin, too pretty, too talented, hardly mulitcultural, no redeeming intellectual value unrealistic preening. Sorry, if that's extreme but I'm very upset.
I'm eager to hear from other parents that may feel the same and to try and figure out how to stop this. Please email Noggin/ Nick to voice your disapproval or take the extra step like we are and turn off ALL VIACOM PROGRAMMING until they listen to parents!
Thanks for listening!

Hello all! I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to address this but I have a serious issue with the amount of asbestos my husband puts in my coffee, and it's giving me the runs every morning
I have a 2 year old and Noggin is grea - no ads and great age-based,imagination play shows but part of the reason we watch this channel is (was) the affair I was having with Steve from Blue's Clues. This show with it's detective dog, who was also blue, was putting a lot of good cops out of business. Cheesey, too thin, too salty, too tasteless, hardly any sauce, no flavor in the sauce. Sorry, if that's extreme but I'm very upset with Domino's old pizza.
I'm eager to hear from other immigrants that may feel the same and to try and figure out how to stop this. Please email Al Gore to voice your disapproval or take the extra step like we are and turn off ALL CANADIAN PROGRAMMING until they listen to our demands!
Live Long and Prosper!
I thought I was going to hate, hate, HATE the Fresh Beat Band when I saw the promos before the show started. But now it's one of the few shows that I am happy to let my son watch!
I'll agree, yes they're cheesy. Thin? Well, they're not fat, but I'd say that the women who play Kiki and Marina look healthy. Talented? Frankly, you can tell that they're not playing their instruments and even though they have decent voices, they aren't going to win American Idol, either.
As for the last two problems that you have, I have some BIG issues with those:
Hardly multicultural: There are only 4 Fresh Beat Band members, two of whom are white, yes. But the other two are multicultural: obviously, Shout is black and the actress who plays Kiki is part Middle Eastern (how many Middle Easterners are on TV nowadays?) and Latina. And then, if you look at the extras and back-up dancers, you'll see TONS of diversity. You'll see people of all races and lots of different ethnicities. In fact, I'll go on a limb and say that the Fresh Beat Band is THE MOST multicultural show on Nickelodean (but then again, I'm saying that this show has the biggest MIX of cultures. Obviously, Dora and Diego focus on their culture, but there isn't a huge mix in their shows).
No redeeming intellectual value: My son has learned a ton since watch Fresh Beat Band. In addition to getting up and dancing and singing long after the show is finished, he has learned about musical instruments, musical terms, has picked up on the humor in the show (for example he'll take the phrase, "Did somebody say... BANANAS?" and start throwing in different words at the end: "Did somebody say... MOMMY?!"), and understands the concepts of teamwork, perseverence, problem solving, etc. in part thanks to this show. And I'd have to say that there are definitely a number of shows on Nickelodean that are even more brainless that the Fresh Beat Band. But I'm not a hater... I won't name them. I won't watch them nor let my son watch them, but I don't want to call out a show that others may love.
It is clear that either you haven't watched the Fresh Beat Band or if you have, you have watched it with a closed mind.
uhhhh, i dont know where to begin explaining why thats dumb. i am a 21 year old college student and my roommate is 20, and we probably watch the fresh beat band every day between our classes. it is just the right amount of happy and fun that, in combination with substance abuse, makes the rest of the day a shiny success. remember that part in bananas when shout just kind of yells at the camera? thats my favorite.
now let me move onto your reasons for not liking the fresh beats. i have seen att least a dozen episodes, and everything they do is good, moral fun. they solve problems as a group help others, and are basically great people, so there should be no reason to have a "beef" with them. and what, theyre too talented? you dont want your kids watching someone with talent? maybe if you didnt live downriver from a power plant your children would be talented too. then you break the camel's back and call for a boycott of viacom. listen, 1. people obviously want to watch the show, otherwise it wouldnt be on television. 2. why would you boycott a show that has no moral imperfection at all? if you are successful, a lot of people will lose their jobs because you...(which brings me to no. 3) 3... are too lazy to take parenting into your own hands and instead of regulating the shows that your kid watches, you just plop them in front of the television and ignore them. JUST BECAUSE YOU DONT LIKE SOMETHING IT DOESNT MEAN IT SHOULDNT EXIST. c'mon dog thats selfish.
welcome to the real internet, parents
I have been watching the fresh beats with my daughter since it began and I have to say that some parents are way too sensitive. Yes there are two cute girls that sing and dance in the band, but what is the problem with that? Should they have deliberately searched for unattractive, over-weight girls to fill the positions so that us not so perfect parents could feel better about the images that our children are watching? Their songs are up beat, cute, and fun to dance around to. My daughter doesn't just sit and watch, she jumps up, dances and sings. People who are terrified of stereotypes need to ease up a little. They are not Victoria Secrets models hopping around in bikini's, they are talented young girls promoting excercise, dance, and expression through music. I see nothing inappropriate.
My 17 month old daughter loves the show. While I recognize that in fact the show is cheesy, I love the show. I think that it is important for creativity to be encouraged and this show definitely does that. I don't think that anyone on the show would be considered overly unhealthy (to thin), I think that as parents we should encourage our children to be healthy at whatever weight they are. They encourage eating fruits and vegtables, singing and dancing with friends, helping out people in the community, etc. It is a very multi-cultural show and show teens and younger children of multiple races. I commend a show that celebrates the arts when all to often today the arts are ignored due to budget constraints. The show also teaches problem solving skills. The only problem I have with the Fresh Beats is that there are not enough episodes and though my daughter is still thoroughly entertained, I would prefer not to watch the same few episodes for the 600th time.
I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this. I am one of those parents that finds teens/adults acting silly just to entertain a child very annoying... with that being said after watching the Fresh Beat Band with my son... I hated every minute of it, but he absolutely LOVED it. He was 18 months old when we started watching it and after 2 times seeing it he could recognize them by name and remembered several parts of their dance! That is huge for a toddler! The more we watch it together the more he gets involved and jumps and dances around... I would much rather he be up moving and dancing than simply sitting on the floor. I am very impressed at the fact that there is a large variety of people on the show, from plus size women to Asian men! I would hope that a parent could recognize that children enjoy this show even if it is silly and has no "educational value". I t has helped my son with memory and recall and the moment the music starts he gets excited!
What a sad world we live in. So glad I have open minded friends. This is crazy. May I ask where you get the bubble your children live in???????? So funny and crazy. These will be the children who are completely messed up in the future. The ones who are not allowed to see reality.
This doesn't belong on a channel for little kids. Not to mention it's pap. It's like Barney for preteens. Ew, ew, ew. I am already annoyed by Wubbzy and Oswald. Where's the value?
My guess is it's a 30-minute advertisement. They probably hope to see the music and market the kids. Like that almight horror, Kidz Bop.
It's like letting your child eat junk food. They're pushing kids to put junk food into their brains.
It's not like we watch a lot, but the channel is a good babysitter to keep the kid busy and safe when I am cooking. And my child has a very good memory -- she tends to demand to see programs that she's seen accidentally.
And it's true that it's awful too-perfect body image overly groomed, sacherine pap, too. If you don't wnat to face that, that's fine it's your choice. But it doesn't mean it's not there.
And for the love of God, I want to find that blonde guy and duct-tape his mouth shut the next time he tries to rap.
ya knoe wut i want 2 duct-tape your mouth and all who hate creativaty! i am just saying but parents who i guess dident have the chance 2 be creative wen thay wer young, wont let ther kids be creative ether!
Ok first things first, i have a 2yr old and she abosolutly loves the fresh beats!
for thoes of you who think the band is for tweens or teens thats good, but for my 2 yr old she loves to get up and dance and is'ent that what the show is for?
It is ok to have a show about dancing! ya got Dora and kai lan for language and blues clues for shapes and other show covering other types of learning experience.
i guess some people dont like ther kids having fun dancing and singing along with the show!
thats what the show is all about!
And if you dont like it turn your tv off and teach your own kid!
Lady, get over yourself. Seriously. I would rather see my daughter watching the fresh beat band "jumping around" then the alternative violent, gang banging, or shows that are sexually oriented. The fresh beat band are positive role models encouraging children to sing, dance, and express themselves creatively. What the heck is wrong with that?
Future mom of a jump around kid.....
really! I mean really. My 2 y/o daughter loves this show. It's the media so the people will be some what good looking but they are by no means over the top beautiful people they are normal looking to me. Also what are you teaching your child when you focus on how the people look or even what color is where. People are people and it shouldn't matter what race, sex, or even how pretty or homely they look. You said their talent isn't realistic but they go to music shcool and I think if you go to music school your gonna be good at it.
Lighten up! The Fresh Beats are cheesy, I will give you that, but what preschool show isn't? The show promotes physical activity, a love for music, teamwork, friendship, a positive attitude and just plain fun. I agree that it does not promote multiculturalism despite the african american and latino cast members, but so what? As far as "too thin and too pretty", you are crazy. The girls on the show are healthy and yes attractive, but what show doesn't have attractive characters? Dora, Miss Spider, Max and Ruby, Diego, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, etc all have "attractive" characters. "Too talented"? Are you serious? If you truly want to keep your child away from all these "negative" stereotypes, put them in a box and don't let them out. If you can find fault with the Fresh Beats, you are going to find fault with everything on TV. PS.
Sorry to disappoint, but I have to make a comment on one statement in your post...Wubbzy certainly does teach lessons - not to lie, think outside the box, be creative, don't open stuff that is not for you, just to mention a few. I think most kids' shows absolutely do teach lessons, some more strongly than others, but on Nick Jr., I don't think there are any shows that don't teach something.
Just my $.02
I think you are just a bit too critical of something that you obviously don't understand. All you do is complain with no real substance behind it, just saying that you hate it & making general unintelligent statements. I feel truly sorry for your kids. Instead of teaching them tolerance about things that aren't necessarily agreeable, you are teaching them to complain for the sake of complaining. I certainly hope they don't grow up like you.
My little ones (all under 3) love it - the music, the dancing, the general silliness, & despite the fact that I am not really a fan myself, for a few reasons (which apply to other kids shows as well), I'm intelligent enough to know that the show is not geared towards me, but towards CHILDREN! And exactly what are YOUR issues with a clean, simple, educational show for children? What negative stereotypes & ideas being shown are you trying to keep your children away from? Cheesy, pretty, talented is bad? How could they be more multi-cultural? There's white, black & Spanish - what, there's no Asian represented? Who is too thin, why do you not see any redeeming intellectual value & where is the unrealistic preening? Your complaints are petty & extreme & have no redeeming factual value, since you can't seem to back up your statements with anything of substance.
Also, what is the "this" that you want to stop exactly? A decent, musical, educational program for preschoolers? If so, you certainly don't have my vote, & sorry to disappoint, but Nick Jr. IS listening to parents - that is, those whose children enjoy a show geared towards them, one that gets good ratings, & thank the Good Lord they don't listen to incomprehensible, nonsensical, non-substantial complaints like yours...
Thanks for listening...
The thing is that if yu're constntly dancing and jumping around and having to do this repetitively in rehearsal and stuff, you seem to tone your muscles well. I'm pretty sure that learning where to go and repeating the motions are why they're "skinny". But maybe it's their body type that they were made with. Every body is different. Exposing children to this, and then shows that exhibit other-looking people will show them this. But, again, dancing tones you. It's just how it is. They cold also be pro-dancers, so they stay in shape like that. It's not a bad thing. It's healthy. Promote it; don't hate it. :)
The original post is ludicrous. The dancing is not suggestive and you're wrong to say that it's "hardly multicultural" - one of the girls is Latina and one of the guys is African-American. Are you getting them confused with another group? Yes it's cheesy, the people are pretty and talented, but NEWS FLASH, all kids' shows are cheesy and you have to be pretty and talented to be on TV or you're not getting the job.
I think you're overreacting, and if you don't like it then change the channel. Noggin/Nick Jr. will continue to be shown in my house.
