  • SPRING CRAFTS CONTEST **CLOSED**

Hey crafty mamas and crafty papas (and crafty aunts and uncles too)! Here at ParentsConnect, we've got Spring Fever! And so, we want to celebrate your crafty creations, and give you the chance to win $100 cash by throwing a SPRING CRAFTS CONTEST! If you have some fabulous and fun spring crafts that you like to do with your kids, now's the time to get your ideas and supplies together, grab a camera, and submit your craft!

There are not one, not two, but THREE (3) $100 First prize winners!  Woo-hoo! (How's that for a stimulus package?)

In order for your crafty creation to be eligible for the contest, make sure you do the following:

    1. Post at least one picture of the completed project in this thread (If you post a craft without a photo, you're not eligible to win the prize.)

    2. Along with your photo, you must give step-by-step directions on HOW to make the project.

    3.  The project MUST stick to the springtime theme. Otherwise, it can be whatever craft you like: decorations, edible crafts, wearable art, gifts, stationery or any other craft, so long as it relates to SPRING!

NOTE: You can't just copy something you saw on another site or in a magazine. (That's, like, illegal and stuff.) However, you can use an idea as a base, then put your own unique spin on top of it!
Projects will be judged on creativity, originality and how easy it is for kids to do.

Post your entries HERE.  Please make sure the pictures are good quality, because we're going to flaunt your fabulous crafts all over the site.

Here are the official rules. Read 'em. Then get to craftin'!

Not sure what happened to my photos with the entry and this was the only way I could figure getting the photos back up without re-entering!

Sycamore Spike Wreath

Spring is here! Look around a Sycamore tree and you will probably find plenty of spiky balls on the ground. Once green seed pods, they are now textural crafting fun!

Items you will need:

8-9 sycamore spike balls

acrylic or tempura paint

Elmer's glue

water

small cup for paint - a kid-sized yogurt cup like Yoplait worked perfectly

craft stick for stirring

paper towels or newspaper

wax paper

thick chenille stem, 12 inch long

quick-dry tacky glue

wire cutters

ribbon

tweezers

1. Collect the balls. Look for balls similar in size and with long stems. Set them out on a paper towel and allow to thoroughly air dry.

These balls use a lot of paint, so you can mix together 2 parts paint to 1 part elmer's glue. Thin with water until you get it just thin enough that it will drip off of the ball. May have to experiment a bit. If it is too thick, it will use a lot of paint and create more of a blob. It it is too thin it won't coat the ball well.

Holding the stem, submerge the spike in the paint mixture. Allow the excess to drip off.

Place the balls on a paper towel or newspaper. A pool of paint will work its way out of all the holes and crevices of the ball. DO NOT let them dry on the paper towel.

When you feel that most of the excess paint has made its way off the balls, transfer them to wax paper.  Allow to dry.

Twist the ends of the chenille stem together to make a circle.

Apply a good amount of quick-dry tacky glue to the chenille. Don't be shy with the glue - once dried this gives your wreath its stability.

Wiggle the spikes down into the chenille. If you plan on keeping the stems on the balls, sunshine-style, pay attention to their direction. Allow the wreath to dry on wax paper. If you used a lot of glue and it looks as if it will dry permanently to the wax paper, carefully move the wreath to new wax paper. Let dry completely.

Trim off the stems, if desired. Carefully thread a ribbon through, avoiding the spikes - may need to grab with some tweezers. Tie in a bow, hang and enjoy your spring decoration from nature!

Paper Craft: Spring Pop-up Nameplate

Tools & Supplies: Scissors, Glue (school glue), Markers (assorted colors, black), Construction Paper (1 green, 1 blue, and a few more in assorted colors)

Step 1: Pick your name and count the letters. If you are using a name with 7 letters or less, you can fold the 11" side in half. If you are using a name with more than 7 letters, you would be better off using the 8" side folded in half (see examples at bottom of post).

Step 2: In the middle of the folded edge, make a 1" cut and then another about .3" away. This will hold the middle letter of your name. You can approximate the distance between letters based on how many letters in your name (or you can measure... I'm an approximator!)

Step 3: Cut a grass or leaf pattern at the top and/or bottom of the paper. Set aside.

Step 4: Cut out rectangles approximately 2"x1.75"... one for every letter in the name. Freestyle cut out letters. They will match visually because of the size contraint. (If you need the letters to match exactly, you can make or buy alphabet patterns. Sewing stores sell them in packages of varying sizes...) Set aside.

Step 5: Pick up the folded paper with the parallel cuts. Push the parallel cuts through the other side and fold to press crisp edges.

Step 6: Glue letters to the cut throughs so that they are legible from the front.

Step 7: Make embellishments based on your favorite aspect of Spring.

Step 8: Glue embellishments to nameplate. Set aside to dry.

Step 9: Fold blue paper in the same manner you did for step one (if you did 8" side, fold same way).

Step 10: Glue nameplate into blue folded paper.

Step 11: Embellish further, or stop and admire your new Spring Pop-up Nameplate

Grace's take on it:

HERE ARE SOME OTHER EXAMPLES:

Liv's take on it:

My take on it (with a little help from little helpers!):

These are on our mantle. They are very cheery! Happy Spring!

FASHIONABLE CHICKEN FINGERS

lily's egg dye-ing date with her best friend lily (yes, lily's bestie is named lily) was cancelled today so she was jonesing to make some easter crafts...but ones that she could PLAY with.   so we made some fabulous n' fashionable finger puppets.

(that's sasha, not lily)

need:

felt

glue gun

fabric hot glue

embellishments - ribbons, feathers, rhinestones

googlie eyes

marker

scissors

1.  have your child draw a big fat finger shape onto a piece of felt.

2.  put another piece of felt behind that one and help her cut out the two pieces of felt at the same time (you need grown up scissors for this)

3.  cut out wings for your puppet.  they can be any shape.  we made them a little long.  oops.

4.  put hot glue on around the inside edge of one of the pieces of felt, stick the wings inside and then press the other piece on top of it.  voila finger puppet!

5.  glue on googlie eyes (or you can make eyes from felt)

6.  cut out a little diamond shape, put a little hot glue in the center of it and squeeze it together to make a beak.  hot glue it onto your puppet. cheep.

7.  make hair for your puppet.  lily wanted her chick to have braids so i cut a 1" x 4" piece of felt into three strips and braided them together.  glue hair on.

8.  dress your chicken if you don't want her to be a nudie.

9.  embellish to your hearts content!

bock bock!

Thanks, my daughter loves them and they are so easy to make!

Apr 10 2009, 03:26 PM

How fun is this one!  Not expensive to make and a tasty result.  I can see the potential to go crazy with this idea!  I usually buy those kits with the little crystals that you melt into metal forms for classmate b-day gifts and the girls love them.  This reminds me of those kits.

Apr 10 2009, 01:16 PM

Thanks!  It's funny how many names people have for those little spiky balls!  Thanks for the gift!

Apr 10 2009, 01:12 PM

I love that your project uses gumballs right from the yard!  I mean you have to do something to get rid of them anyway might as well have some fun and pretty them up right??

Apr 10 2009, 01:03 PM

Thanks! They're cute and tastey!

Apr 6 2009, 11:29 PM

OMG!  these are all so freaking awesome!  me and lily made the caterpillars tonight - sooo cute!  and now we're so making the lollypops tomorrow!

THANK YOU CRAFTY GODDESSES!

Edible Spring Flowers

Supplies:  Craft sticks or popscicle sticks

                  Hard candy (round)

                  Oven and oven mit

                  Little ones hands for help

                  Cookie sheet covered in foil

How to:     Heat oven to 250 degrees F.

Take your craft stick and put it in on the foil. Use six hard candies (we used Life Savers but you can use any candy for this) for the petals. You can use all the same colors or different ones for a variety.

Take a seventh candy for the center of the flower in a different color than the rest.

Start about 1/4 of the way down on your craft stick and put the candy that will be your center piece. Then arrange all the rest of the candies around the center piece like a flower. (help little ones make sure all the edges of the candies are touching or they won't melt together well).

Once your flowers are arrange on the foil put in the oven for ten min. Keep a close eye so they do not melt too much. After ten min. pull them out and let them cool for about 5 or 10 min. then peal off the foil.  Now you have your very own homemade flower suckers!
