This popular Irish bread can accompany just about every meal in Ireland. Not unlike a pint of Guinness. We recommend bread for the kids. Bread and Guinness for you.

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees

2 Add flour, sugar, salt and baking soda to a large bowl and mix well to blend.

3 Add softened butter and stir to incorporate the butter into the flour mixture.

4 Form a well in the flour and add egg and buttermilk.

5 Stir well to form a dough.

6 Place dough in a mound on a greased baking sheet and form into a rounded loaf shape.

7 Cut a large "X" in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife

8 Bake 45 minutes, or until golden brown and baked through.

9 Let cool slightly, slice and serve warm, or cool to room temperature, slice and serve.

  • For sweeter bread, add a cup of raisins and an additional 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough.
