As desserts go, this one isn't bad if you're watching your middle. If you're a batter-licker, have a nibble before you put in the raw egg. After that, you'll just have to wait the 10 agonizing minutes they take to bake.

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup raisins

1 Heat oven to 350° F.

2 Cream butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl until smooth.

3 Add molasses and egg and beat well.

4 Stir in salt, baking soda, cinnamon and ginger.

5 Add flour and oats and stir well.

6 Stir in raisins.

7 Place spoonfuls on a greased baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

8 Allow to cool for 1–2 minutes.

9 Remove from cookie sheet and cool on cookie rack.

  • Try adding chopped walnuts or pecans for a crunchy and nutritious extra.
