Calcium, protein and carbs, oh, my! This smoothie is plenty healthy for you and Mini. (Oh, and it tastes yummy, too.)

  • 1 cup calcium-fortified orange juice
  • ¼ cup roasted sesame butter (tahini)
  • 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt
  • 1 ripe (spotted) banana, sliced and frozen

1 Place orange juice, sesame butter and yogurt in blender.

2 Blend on highest speed until thoroughly mixed.

3 Add banana slices and continue blending until thick and creamy.

4 Serve immediately.

  • Got a banana that seems too ripe (all black and spotted) to eat? Don't toss it—it's perfectly mushy for a smoothie.

though, let me state that flax seed oil, or even ground flax seed isn't always recommended by one's midwife/ob, so definitely talk to your doc before using it! different providers have varying opinions about it. just thought i'd add that little caveat.

I just made this, and for those who find the idea of tahini unappetizing (I actually love tahini, just didn't have any on hand), I substituted 3 tbsp milled flax seed and added 2 tbsp honey for a little sweetness. It was delicious! My two year old drank his entire cup of it down in about 2 minutes! Also, flax seed is an excellent source of omega-3s, which is really important during pregnancy.

Monieamore: Tahini (or sesame butter) is actually like peanut butter, except made with sesame seeds not peanuts. It's traditionally used in hummus (yum!) if you don't like sesame you definitely will not like this smoothie. It is an aquired taste for sure.

It sounds gross! Is sesame butter a type of butter and if it is, why would I want to drink it in a smoothie!
