Dad's favorite cake mix or recipe |
Baking paraphernalia: Mixing bowl, spoons, measuring cup, measuring spoon. |
A muffin tin |
A rectangular cake pan |
Oven |
A knife |
A piece of cardboard covered in aluminum foil: It needs to be sturdy enough to hold the cake, so think cardboard box instead of cereal box. |
Frosting |
Embellishments: Licorice, red cinnamon candies, fruit rolls, food coloring, chocolate candies, etc. |
| 1 |
Help your kid mix or make up a batch of cake batter.
| 2 |
Pour a little batter into one section of the muffin tin and the rest into the rectangular pan.
| 3 |
Bake according to your recipe or the instructions on the box.
| 4 |
When the cakes are done, let them cool and then pop them out of the pans.
| 5 |
Help your kid cut the rectangular cake in half lengthwise.
| 6 |
Lay the pieces down on the cardboard end-to-end to make one long, thin piece of cake.
| 7 |
Have your kid put the cupcake at the top. This is the tie's "knot."
| 8 |
Then help her cut the other end into a "V" shape to look like the bottom of a tie. (Think of the cake scraps as the reward for all your hard work.)
| 9 |
Frost the cake in dad's favorite color and add decorations like red cinnamon candies for a polka dot tie or licorice sticks for a striped tie.
| 10 |
This year dad can't complain that his family has no taste in ties!
