sorry, can't give it up). We have a great farmer's market so it's pretty easy for me... last Saturday, I found free-range chicken, grass-fed beef and pork, veggies, berries, etc. Anyway, I was thinking we could share our tips/tricks to eating locally.

... increased demand and cost of oil? According to the Pacific Institute's 2006 figures, producint the bottles for American consumption required the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil, not including the energy for transportation. In that same year bottling water for US consumption produced 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. It takes 3 pints of water to produce 1 paint of bottled water. Does your family consume more bottled water than they used to? Why or why not?

... Mostly use good ol' tap water. Although I've been kind of at a loss since the water button on our fridge broke recently- at 1st I was like -OMG- I have to get water from the sink -LOL- funny how you don't think about things like that until it's not working. Well again I hope they can get things figured out more on the oil prices-etc. The Pres. just held a press conference this AM on this. I think we are under utilizing oil here and hope they do open up more refineries. And I think they should look into more ideas like getting fuel geo-thermally-etc.

been trying to grow lots of my own veggies to offset the high prices (and pesticide use)...am I going to have to now grow my own grains?

to convince my husband to let us join - for diapers and wipes (i hear kirkland's the BEST) and for big boxes of cereal and ketchup...but we don't have car and it doesn't make sense. But enough about where I live, it's a little scary all that "they" say is looming ahead. I tried to stay positive and hopeful for the future...for us and our kids...and try to do whatever I can (within reason) to help the earth, my local grocers, farmers, neighbors, etc.

... adament that unless we are giving our kids organic produce, we are feeding them straight pesticides. While I'd (obviously) like to avoid giving my kids pesticides, I can't afford all organic produce. I saw a carton of organic strawberries on sale at the store the other day for $8.99! Anyway, do you guys do the whole all-organic thing?? I'm feeling kindof guilty that I don't.

... rinse your produce really well and relax. IMO, conventional is fine.

if you can only afford a few (to avoid those that retain the most pesticides). But another side to the issue is also buying local -- organic fruit or veg that's hauled halfway around the world out of season has other implications for our children's long-term well-being...

... producer about how the products were grown, what fertilizers/pesticides were used etc. Prices are usually quite reasonable, and you can feel good knowing you are helping the environment while supporting your local economy.
Also, just being aware goes a long way. Rinsing your foods is a really good idea, but fertilizers and pesticides are absorbed into the plant. That's why organic is preferred.
Also, the key to remember is that fat holds chemicals best. There is a much higher concentration of pesticides/fertilizers/antibiotics etc in your milk than is present in your vegetables. IN order to get the most from your money, you should buy "fatty" products, such as meats and dairy, organic and try to buy as much of your produce local.

... when eating meat that already has medication in it. As in cases of MRSA, a newborn caught this lethal disease the day of his/her birth in England, but since it's illegal to serve food that has antibiotics in it he was able to to be cured of it. In NY a couple of months ago a 12 year old boy died of it.

... levels of pesticides are found in peanut butter and raisins. Usually the thicker the skin, the less the pesticides that are absorbed into the produce. You should know your cleaners and hygeine products are full of chemicals too. I don't want to put all the info I have here, but email me if you want links I've researched, etc that can help you in the cheapest way possible. I spent a long time researching organics, etc when my son broke out in hives from the water and had an asthma attack unless the water was purified. It turned out to be the chlorine in the water he was reacting to. Anyway, this spot is too small for all the info I have, so email me if you'd like all the info. I have yahoo messenger too if you want to chat through that. :)

He won't eat Hot Dogs, Mac & Cheese, Mashed Potatoes, Chicken Nuggets, Grilled Cheese, Pizza etc, but I can always get to him to eat his veggies as long as they're pureed. It's strange because he'll insist on feeding himself and doesn't want anything cut up otherwise, but it's different with the vegetables.

black olives, onions), grate the cheese, make the guacamole, fry up and season the meat. The longer the meat sits in the fridge, the better it tastes ... IMO much better than freshly made. You can heat up a package of soft tortillas in the microwave between two damp paper towels in just a minute or so. Add some salsa from a jar, and some sour cream and you're good to go. The whole thing will come together for you in the evening in about 10 minutes.

grain off the shelf, etc ... I just use the Pizza Quick that I used as a teen for sauce (it has no High Fructose Corn Syrup in it), and I always have fresh tomatoes, black olives, shredded carrots, mushrooms, shredded cheese, turkey pepperoni, and canadian bacon on hand in a drawer in my fridge for a quick go-to. It will take you about 20 minutes start to finish which is faster than delivery and you can control how much cheese you use, and add a ton of vegetables.

by's of Hamburger and Tuna Helper. It's getting warmer out too, so we're starting to fire up the grill. I LOVE a good charred hot dog!! But I'll take them boiled and microwaved too. My kids won't eat hot dogs though. For them, I make those Delimex Taquitos in a box. I call them "chicken chips" since it's chicken wrapped in a corn tortilla, and my son loves taco chips. If you wrap 5 in a paper towel, they're out of the microwave in 2.2 minutes. I also make pizzas on English muffins. And you can't go wrong with the grilled cheese and tomato soup. So, the truth comes out... LOL!
