Have your kid transform an outgrown tee into an afikomen bag to use at this year's Seder. A few snips, some sequins, rhinestones, fabric paint and ribbon and she'll have one mah-velous place to put the matzo with this craft. Plus you'll feel good knowing that at least one of the clothing items you bought her was reused—especially when she only wore it once!
- A small T-shirt:The smaller the better. If your "little one" is now 5' 2", raid your garage for an old toddler tee. If you don't have one, go to the dollar store and buy one.
- Embellishments:Glitter glue, fabric paint, rhinestones, sequins, small fabric flowers.
- Ribbon or fabric trim
- Hot-glue gun and glue sticks:Kids and hot glue don't mix, so make sure you do all the gluing.
- Scissors
Dig up an old, outgrown kid's T-shirt. A plain colored tee may work best so your kid can have free rein to decorate without worrying about clashing patterns.
Help her cut the arms and neck off of the tee in a straight line across the chest.
Hot-glue the tee shut on three sides to make an envelope. You can either glue it and then turn it inside out to hide the seams, or you can just tuck the frayed ends you cut inside as you glue.
Then invite your kid to decorate her afikomen bag to her heart's content. She can draw a picture or write a Passover greeting or the family name onto the bag with fabric paint.
Have her add rhinestones, glitter glue, little buttons or fabric flowers. While she designs, you can be her lackey and do any hot gluing required.
Then help her finish the bag off by adding fabric trim or ribbon to the open end of the bag. Just measure it to fit, cut and hot-glue it on there.
On Passover, have the Seder leader tuck the matzo into the fabulous afikomen bag, hide it and invite all the kids to run around looking for it. They'll need to blow off some steam after sitting still for hours listening to the Haggadah. If only you could get up and join them!
