Start a Musical Family Tradition

Create a music soundtrack for your celebrations!

You probably have traditional family foods—we're talking about Grandma's delicious turkey or Mom's apple pie made every year for Thanksgiving. Or maybe your family follows up holiday dinner with an annual viewing of A Christmas Story or It's a Wonderful Life.

Most families have their own traditions that vary from strange to, well, traditional, but what songs remind you of these good times? Singer/songwriter "Little Miss Ann" Torralba says you don't have to be a rock pro to make musical memories with your family. "In Filipino families, having a 'home' karaoke machine is very normal, so my three sisters, our husbands, the kids and our parents sing along to ours during the holidays. My sisters and I lean towards the '80s covers while our folks sing Sinatra tunes. Everyone has a blast!"

And if you're not comfortable belting out karaoke songs in front of your relatives, try adding a touch of tunage to your family traditions by creating a specific list or music library to play along in the background.

Download some of these ditties:

"Help!" by the Beatles. Make family chore day fun by adding a little background music that will get you movin' AND groovin'!

"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. Pick a fun party song the whole family can boogie to for annual get-togethers!

"Caribbean Blue" by Enya. Rock your little ones to sleep every night with a siren song. Her voice is totally dreamy!

"All I Want for Christmas" by Mariah Carey. Deck the halls and shake your jingle bells!
