All About Diapering Your Baby

Changing a baby's diaper is a no-brainer, right? You've practiced on a doll and there's nothing to it. But it's quite different when you're putting a diaper on your precious newborn. Here's a quick refresher on how to diaper a baby.

Make sure you have everything you need right beside you. You should never, ever leave a baby alone on a bed or changing table. So make sure you've got a fresh diaper, baby wipes (or lukewarm water and a washcloth), baby ointment (if necessary) and a changing pad handy before you begin.

Here's how to get the job done:

  • Place a diaper pad or receiving blanket under your baby to help minimize leakage. Always be prepared when you're changing a baby's diaper!
  • Remove the dirty diaper and place it out of reach so your baby won't think it's food or a toy! With a boy baby, you should cover his penis with a washcloth so you don't get squirted!
  • Use baby wipes or a damp washcloth to wipe your baby's bottom and genitals. Don't forget to wipe from front to back when cleaning a girl's genitals. For either gender, be gentle— remember, your baby's skin is still pretty delicate.
  • Apply petroleum jelly or diaper ointment (zinc oxide) if necessary.
  • Put on a new diaper and make sure that it's fastened tight enough to contain potential leaks. But be sure that it's not too tight or the baby might be uncomfortable.
  • Don't forget to dispose of the dirty diaper somewhere so it doesn't stink up the whole room. Diaper genies are OK, but a plastic bag also does the trick.
  • Clean up the diaper changing area to prevent spreading icky germs. And make sure to wash your hands!
Before you know it, you're going to be a diaper-changing pro and know all about diapers. During the newborn stage, babies generally need to have their diapers changed at least 10 times a day!
