Here's how to get the job done:
- Place a diaper pad or receiving blanket under your baby to help minimize leakage. Always be prepared when you're changing a baby's diaper!
- Remove the dirty diaper and place it out of reach so your baby won't think it's food or a toy! With a boy baby, you should cover his penis with a washcloth so you don't get squirted!
- Use baby wipes or a damp washcloth to wipe your baby's bottom and genitals. Don't forget to wipe from front to back when cleaning a girl's genitals. For either gender, be gentle— remember, your baby's skin is still pretty delicate.
- Apply petroleum jelly or diaper ointment (zinc oxide) if necessary.
- Put on a new diaper and make sure that it's fastened tight enough to contain potential leaks. But be sure that it's not too tight or the baby might be uncomfortable.
- Don't forget to dispose of the dirty diaper somewhere so it doesn't stink up the whole room. Diaper genies are OK, but a plastic bag also does the trick.
- Clean up the diaper changing area to prevent spreading icky germs. And make sure to wash your hands!
