Baby Care: What to Do About Constant Crying

My baby used to be fairly quiet and content. Now he seems to cry all the time. What could be the problem?

Oh, that can be so challenging! There are many reasons why your baby could be crying more now. It's very possible that he is going through a developmental shift. When a child is in the midst of a growth spurt or learning a new skill, he can often be more sensitive and actually needs to cry more to let out some of the stress that's building up in his body as a result of all the changes.

But, if you are relatively sure your baby is not in the midst of any big shifts of his own, check in with yourself: Are you feeling more stressed? Changes at work? Money struggles? Too much time home alone with too little support? Babies are incredibly sensitive and often they will express the emotions they are sensing from the people around them. If you recognize that you are feeling stressed, it's important to take a break, to get some support, and to reassure your baby (even if you don't think he can understand you) that it isn't him who is causing your unpleasant feelings.
