Declan James' Birth Story
Submitted by ashlea_01
The day before my due date I had an appointment with the OB's where he did an internal and said that I was moving along fine and he decided to do a membrane sweep, which was a lil uncomfortable but not painful. My partner and I then went a did our grocery shopping and picked up a few more things for my hospital bag and the whole time my partner saying wouldn't it be funny if your water broke while we were shopping! lol.
We got home (we live a 40 min drive away from the hospital) and I decided to go have a lay down, where I noticed I was getting period like pains. But I had been getting these on and off for the last week. At about 5:30 I heard this noise in my pelvis area like a light cracking noise and I also felt vibrations through my belly. I decided to get up and go to the toilet to check if I was bleeding cause the doctor said if I started bleeding to go straight to the hospital. And as I got to the toilet about 1/2 a cup of fluid gushed out I walked down to the lounge and said to my partner, "I think my waters just broke!"
It took a bit to register I think cause he sorta sat there looking at me for a few seconds like "What!?" I rang the midwives at our hospital and they said to come in for me to be checked. We go a little way down the road a realized that we had forgot the camera so had to turn around and come back home to get it.
When we got there they put me on the monitor and my contractions were very irregular. The doctor said I was in pre-labour and didn't expect anything major to happen till the next day for this was my first baby, but decided to keep me overnight to keep an eye on me.
By this stage my mum and brother were here. They stayed around till about 9 pm and decided to go home for nothing was happening. At about 9:30-10 pm my contractions started to get a little stronger so they gave me a shot of pethidine to help me to sleep, but my contractions just kept getting stronger & stronger.
I was in moved into the birthing suite at 11 pm and I was dilated 2 cms. My contraction were coming strong and fast. I had a shower which helped with the pain a little, cause the pethidine had done nothing and I tried the gas but it didn't do anything and I didn't like it. I stayed walking round as long as I could but by this stage I was buckling at the knees and crippled over the bed. The midwife moved me on top of the bed for she was worried I was gonna collapse. I was given another shot of pethidine to help me rest between contraction but they were coming so fast and strong I only got a min top between contractions to rest.
At 1 am the nurse started to ask if I felt the urge to push as I was getting no rest. The contractions were in full force so I just started pushing and he started crowning. The nurse asked my partner if he wanted to look, but we had discussed this earlier in the pregnancy and he didn't want to look.
After about another 15 mins of pushing his head was out but the cord was wrapped around his neck twice so I had to stop pushing so they could cut the cord so they could get it off from around the neck. My partner was a little disappointed that he didn't get to cut the cord.
By this stage I was ready to give up but the midwife said "One more push!" and that's all I needed to hear and I started pushing like there was no tomorrow. And our little baby boy was born 12th of Nov 2009 at 1:24am right on his due date!
I was a bit worried at first for he wasn't crying and he was very purple but the nurse said it was because of the pethedine and they gave him a drug to reverse the peth'. Once that started to kick in he started to cry and move.
My birth was just under 2.5 hours long which every one was amazed by being that it was my first pregnancy and no tearing! I was so happy I didn't have to have an epidural as well.
We named him on the 2nd day in hospital Declan James. Declan weighed 7.5 pounds at birth and measured 53 cms. We left the hospital on the 3rd day at lunch time. Since being home its been great! he is such a cutey!
