Caleb James B.'s Birth Story
Submitted by ceemami
Well, I am a Full Time college student and a Full Time employee. So when I was told my due date was June 13, 2008, I felt some relief. Then as the months went by and my tummy starting to inflate like a balloon, I realized that my baby could come much sooner than the due date. My biggest worry: I would give birth in the middle of my last days of school or miss my final.
I quickly made back up plans with all my professors who appreciated my persistence to maintain my grades. I told my baby who was kicking my stomach from every angle: "Sweetie, Mommy has a big favor to ask. I really can't wait to see you, and hold you. Can you just make sure to wait until Mommy is done with finals? Just let me finish the semester, and you can come out any time the minute I finish! Love you!" I repeated that so many times as I rubbed my belly. I made sure to make Friday, May 30, 2008 my last day of work. My last school final was Tuesday, May 27, 2009. That day came and passed to my relief. I rubbed my tummy and said: "Thank you my little one. You can come out anytime you want now." On Thursday, I went to work, and everyone knew the next day would be my last and I get to go on my Maternity Leave. My boyfriend said: "You're so lucky your off for 2 weeks before our baby comes." I think my son heard that and thought it was all systems go.
My boyfriend works early and has to be up by 3:30 AM to get ready. He got up and went to the bathroom. I awoke but started falling back asleep. Then, all of a sudden I felt water coming from down there, and my first reaction was: "Please tell me I just peed, and it was just an accident." I turned on the lights looked at the bed and looked at my clothes. It definitely was not a number 1. I yelled: "Uh Babe.... BABE! BABE!" and I ran to the door: "My water... my water just broke!! Our baby is coming! He's going to come soon!!! Call off work. We gotta go." He was shocked: "Are you sure? Wow, he's coming!" So he grabbed his cell and I grabbed mine. We called my doctor, his work, my mom and his mom. It was crazy. I felt so tired earlier and now it was adrenaline, excitement, and fear overcoming me to get everything ready, and have this baby. I felt little contractions during our trip to the hospital, but it was less than a cramp.
By morning I realized that I forgot to call off work since it was my last day. My boss called to see if I was ok, and I told them the good news, and they found it funny that I worked so hard to get my time off and now my baby was going to be here. Then, after lots of family came to see how we were doing throughout the day, I realized that it had been almost 19 hours, and I still wasn't "progressing". They told me to relax. HOW CAN I RELAX WITH THE PAIN HITTING EVERY 5 MINUTES OR LESS?! My pain had increased hour by hour, and I was tired. It didn't help that I had a nurse telling me that her experience with all 3 kids were super easy and less than 20 minutes. Gee, thanks. Not every woman can take the pain, and sometimes the pain isn't there! Periods are different, and so is birthing. I just wanted to sleep since it was already about 11PM. The last doctor told me if I don't start dilating more I may have to go for a C section. No way! After so many painful contractions, I gave up on the all "NATURAL" birthing method, and told them I wanted the Epidural ASAP. My boyfriend wanted me to do it earlier to stop my pain, but I refused. I felt so at peace, relaxed completely, and fell asleep quickly.
By 4AM, the nurses came back and said I was almost ready. Hoo-Ray!!! At around 7AM, they let me know that my doctor was delivering another baby and she'd be here to deliver mine soon. At 8:51AM, almost 29 hours after my water broke, we welcomed our son, Caleb James! Thank you so much for listening to Mommy! Love You!
