Emma Marie's Birth Story
Submitted by Brockstar09
My husband, 3-year-old, and I arrived at the hospital to be induced about 6 AM, Monday, March 15, 2010. I was 3 to 4 cm dilated and 50% effaced. They started the pitocin drip about 7 AM and I immediately started contracting. My 3-year-old left with his Nana and was excited to spend the day with his favorite cousin.
At about 7:40 AM, my doctor came in and checked me again and I was 5 cm and 80% effaced. He went ahead and broke my water to speed things up even more and told me to let the nurses know when I wanted my beloved epidural. I went as long as I could without it but somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00 I wanted it very badly. I did sit on a birthing ball-those are pretty awesome. I had one of my three boys with no epidural and it wasn't by choice. I just hadn't arrived in time. This was the perfect epidural. With my previous ones, I couldn't feel anything and with this one I could move my legs and feel contractions but they didn't hurt!
After my epidural, I was relaxing and playing my DS. I started to feel pressure in my bottom about 10:50 AM. I told the nurse so she checked me and I was completely dilated and ready to push! I informed her that I was a great pusher and had never had to push more than 3 times. She told me not to push and try to wait because my doctor likes to be the one to "catch" the babies. It was very hard for me not to push but he arrived about 11:10. He sat at the end of the bed and told me to push a bit. I did and he said "wow, you really are a good pusher" He kept repeating things like this and he's a funny guy anyway so that's what started me laughing. I thought it was so funny because he seemed genuinely impressed with my pushing abilities. I could not stop laughing, but I was still pushing. I told everyone to "Stop it, I need to concentrate here" but the nurses, doc, and hubby thought that was funny, too. The doc said "I think that's a great way to bring a baby into the world!" (while laughing).
I tried to stop laughing but gave up quickly as I was still pushing well. I didn't stop between contractions I just kept going and Emma Marie (our first girl) entered the world to a laughing mom and dad at 11:21 AM. I literally laughed our baby out!
She weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 22 inches long. She has lots of dark hair and dark eyes. My induction went very fast with the whole process lasting less than four hours. I feel like this was the perfect birth and that's so satisfying because we feel our family is complete now and she will be our last. I didn't tear and I'm not even swollen. My body is like a birthing machine-I'm very efficient. It hasn't been 24 hours yet and I have almost stopped bleeding.
I know there are a lot of labor horror stories out there, but I feel this is a very positive story of induction and labor. Thanks for letting me share my very joyous labor experience with you!
