Grayson's Birth Story

Submitted by GraysonsMama
It was Saturday morning. I was 38 weeks along. My dad had been over all month helping me get my house ready for when the baby arrived. That morning I had gotten out of bed and was getting ready for my dad to show up. Right as he was pulling into the driveway I had about 1/2 to a cup of water gush out. I freaked out a bit and cleaned up to meet him at the door. Then I called my doctor.

They told me to take it easy for the day and not to worry if there wasn't any more fluid coming out. That day was the day we had planned to take all the trash to the dump. By the afternoon I was feeling fine so we decided to make the trip. Nothing else happened for the rest of the day. My dad and I finished up what we had planned for the day.

That night I was putting the clothes away in the baby’s room. I am such a night owl I didn’t get to bed until 1 am. I was awaken at 2:30 am by the feeling I was wetting the bed. I got up to go to the bathroom, and just as I stood up I knew my water had broken. I went to my phone and called my parents. My dad answers and decided he was going to use the bathroom while he was talking to me and for some unknown reason thought it was funny. My mom finally got on the phone and told me that since I wasn’t having contractions to just go back to bed. So I put a pad on and went back to bed. But the only problem was my mind was racing and didn’t get to sleep until around 5 am and tossed and turned all night.

My mom had called my sister and told her what had happened and she was calling me around 9:30 yelling that I needed to be at the hospital if my water broke. I was still not having any contraction. I got off the phone with her and right after my parents called to tell me they were on their way to pick me up and go to the hospital. My sister called them and said I was in labor and needed to go.

Well we get to the hospital and sure enough my water broke and I was only 2 cm, so they checked me in around 11 am. My family and I had time before they moved me to my room we went down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. I got a salad but just wasn’t feeling up to eating anything. By noon I was in my room and still wasn’t having any contractions. They put me on a drip to help speed my contractions up. My contractions had started but weren't painful at all. I decided to get some sleep since I hadn’t had much and want to get some energy, but there was too many people coming in and out of my room it was too hard to sleep. So I decided to take a bath to relax.

By 2:30 pm they had asked several times if I was ready for the epidural. I wasn’t in any pain but thought that I should go ahead and get it, so it’s there when I need it. The surgeon comes and tells me what is going to happen. He tells me it isn’t going to hurt much more than a pinch. That’s was the worse pain I have ever felt! He finishes and leaves. It's 5 pm and my contractions are about 2 to 3 minutes apart and I can feel every one of them. I was in so much pain. Well come to find out he had put the epidural in wrong so I had to bare through the pain of getting it again. After the second one kicked in they decided it was time to start pushing, its 7:30 pm.

While I am in labor my dad has decided that he is going to come in the room and wants to know what is taking so long. Then again he decides to come in again, by the third time I am tired of him coming in I scream at him to get out. They still laugh about it today. I continued to push, it reaches 10 pm and they have given me oxygen and not really happy that nothing had happen by that point. I am so exhausted and so hungry, we decided we would give it a couple more tries and if the baby still didn’t descend down we would have to go c-section.

At 10:45 pm we called it quits. I am crying because that was the last thing I wanted to do. They get me prepped for a c-section. I remember being wheeled to the room, it was so cold. The room was white and had lights everywhere. My mom was going to be by my side, so she was getting dressed to come in the room for me. While I am laying there they tell me they are going to numb me up. They give me my first dose and attempted to cut but I could still feel everything. They gave me a second dose and still I could feel it. Then they tried a third, I have a very high tolerance to pain medicine, which I was still able to feel what they were doing. They told me I was going to have to go under because they couldn’t give me anymore. I started crying again knowing that it is dangerous. I am starting to count backwards and with my last moment awake I look at the clock and it reads 11:59pm. My mom still waiting to be brought to where I was was spotted by a nurse who asked what she was still doing there. My mom replies that she is waiting to be taken to where I was. The nurse paused and said that she would have the surgeon come talk to her and left. She was beginning to worry because she knew something went wrong by this point.

I wake to a small room with no one it is. Soon a nurse comes in and is asking me how I feel and the only thing I wanted at the time was to see my son and my mom. She told me I needed to wake up a bit before that would happen. Finally my mom was able to come in for a few minutes and see me. She said my son was beautiful and I did a great job. She told me the reason he never pushed down was because the cord was wrapped around his neck 3 times. My son was born at 12:07 am. They finally wheeled me to my room by 2:30 am. And that is where I met the love of my life.
