Soleil's Birth Story: Quickie

Submitted by Menendea
The birth of my second child was a little bit of a wild ride. With my first baby I had her the traditional way in the hospital. The experience left me wanting something more...different. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I started researching alternative ways to deliver my baby.

After A LOT of convincing of my partner I finally got him to agree to a home birth with a midwife. Considering the fact that his sister was soon to be a pediatrician, the family was not pleased with my decision.

When the due date approached I told myself that when I have REAL contractions there would be no doubt about it so if I thought to myself "is this a contraction?" then it probably wasn't. I first started feeling something on Sunday afternoon I had contractions for about two hours then they stopped completely. I still made my boyfriend stay with me at home as opposed to go out to a party we were supposed to go. He was a little upset so I blamed him for stalling the birth.

The next day I told him this is the day. My mother had told me that taking a bath with fig leaves (boiling them in a pot of water and adding them to the bath water) hurried things along so I did it along with the castor oil early in the morning around 10 am. I felt nothing the whole day didn't even have to go to the bathroom that often. I started getting really mild contractions at around 6pm. Not painful at all just there. David go really nervous of course and wanted to call the midwife right away. He even asked me if I wanted him to call an ambulance. At 6:30 the student of the midwife called to check up on me. I told her I had just started getting contractions and when should I call them back to come to my house since they lived about 45min to 1hr away and maybe longer if there was traffic since they lived out in more rural areas and I was right outside NYC in NJ. She didn't really know what to say to she told me that I should probably call the head midwife and talk to her. I didn't call her since I thought it was still really early so I was going to wait until I at least had some pain. Turns out she called her instead and told her to head over that I was in full blown labor.

The midwife called me at 7 by this point it had started to hurt a little and I told her that yeah I was having contractions but that she could hold off. Thank God she didn't listen to me she made it to my house at 7:45pm. I was still not in that much pain. I was joking, listening to music, just hanging out. I was really worried that I had made her come all this way for nothing.

When she was checking me I told her I hope I'm at least 2cm dilated she look at me and just smiled and told me I was 8cm. All of a sudden it went from really mild pain to really painful in 10min I barely had time to get in the tub it had just finished filling when I jumped in and two intense contractions later my little baby was born.. 8lbs of loveliness.

It was incredible and unbelievable. The apprentice midwife came in as she was being born an the other midwife wasn't even told. It was soo fast and the last minutes were so intense. I'm so glad everything was so fast I don't think I could have taken the last few minutes if they had been longer. The great thing was that it was mind blinding pain and then no pain at all in between contractions. The last two contractions were great. The first pushed out her head and it was out at that point I had taken about 5 min of brutal pain and then after her head was out I had a min reprieve were it was as if someone had just turned off the pain switch and I was just floating in the tub resting then came another wave and she was here. It was incredible : 0 )
