Alexander James' Birth Story
Submitted by HollyGermain
On the 19th of November at about 1:15am, I woke up feeling quite strange, so I went to the bathroom thinking I needed to pee, and nothing came out. So I stood up and some what I thought at the time was pee came out so I sat back down, and actually peed this time so I thought nothing of it.
I still felt strange so I went and sat on the couch. It happened again. I thought Id peed (lol!), so back to the bathroom I went, but on my way half way down the hall, my waters started gushing out! And I thought, "Well crap..." lol! I looked at the color, and it was pinkish clear, so I woke Dave and called my midwife to let her know what had happened. We decided to meet at the hospital at about 9 am since I wasn't having any contractions yet, just some cramping.
So I decided to get more sleep and I just could not get comfy. Then by about 3 am I had my first real contraction. It wasn't too bad, so I thought, "OK, I'll see how far apart that one and the next one was." And sure enough, the next one came about 15 20 minutes later. So I got up and timed them. The next few contractions were quite irregular, but really intense. I knew then that I wasn't going to make it to 9 am!!
By about 4:30 am, they were about 5 minutes apart and really, really strong. So strong I couldn't talk or walk through them. So I got my Dave up again, and told him to call my midwife. I told him to tell her we would be leaving now. We also called a friend to come pick up Ethan to have him for the morning. And so we jumped in the car and headed for the hospital. On the way I called my mum and told her to get to the hospital as fast as she could. lol!
At about 5:30 or 5:45 am (I can't really recall), we got to the hospital and headed up to the birth suite. My midwife wasn't there yet but I was taken to my room where I could be laboring and giving birth. I remember being walked down the hall to my room and hearing a lady who was in the room next to me screaming at the top of her lungs. I cringed thinking to myself, "That's going to be me in a few hours." I got into my room and sat straight on to a birthing ball. I bounced and rolled around between contractions to help bring the baby down more, walked around the room some and leaned up against Dave and rocked my hips, whenever I had a contraction.
Mum got to the birth suite at about 6 am and around 6:30 or 7:00 am , I wanted in the shower for a while. Mum had the water spraying my lower back, and she was massaging my shoulders, which really helped. Dave was standing in front of me so I could lean into him whenever I had a contraction. It was not long before I grew tired of the shower and wanted the bath. So Kate, my midwife, filled it up for me and as soon as it was filled I hoped in. And omg, it brought relief!! I felt so relaxed!! The bad thing was, it was slowing down my contractions and by this point I just wanted things to happen fast. And in fact they were, but not fast enough for me. So I got out after about half an hour.
I walked around some more, and pretty soon my contractions were so bad and on top of each other I couldn't do it any more, but I knew I had to keep going. I kept yelling, "It hurts!" and trying to break my mum and Dave's hand! lol! Let me tell you: the both of them together were just amazing. They got me through it!!
By about 8 am I tried kneeling down on my knees and rolling back and forth on the gym ball. Then when I thought it was too uncomfortable, I tried leaning over the bed and squatting with each contraction. This is when I realized things were happening and, fast. I realized I needed to push. I was grunting and making pretty bad animal noises too! haha!
I wanted to use the birthing stool, 'cause I needed to sit down on something. I was exhausted!! So with Dave behind me with his hands around my belly, me leaning against his body and my mum beside me and my midwife in front, with a torch (so she could see what was happening), I started pushing. I pushed for about 15 minutes and with in two pushes, Alexander James was born at 8:43 am! Weighing in at 8 lbs 3 oz, his length was 52 cm's, so quite a long baby! But so tiny! They lifted him up to my chest as soon as he was born and I held him till my placenta was born. I got up on to the bed as I needed stitches. I had to have gas and air for those because it would have cained! So I tried latching him and he fed for 2 whole hours!!! Yes, even while I was being stitched up!
We stayed in the birth suit till about 3 pm and came home at about 4:30 pm. He's been such an amazing baby so far! Doing well!!!
