Mikey's Birth Story
Submitted by dmedina0920
So... I was 33 weeks and 4 days along and I knew what contractions felt like as I had them nearly every time my husband and I would be intimate and after an hour or so they would subside. Well after doing the dirty I felt the contractions and they weren't bad at all but didn't stop for a while. I didn't worry about it because I knew it was normal for things like that to happen.
The next morning (July 10th, 2009) I was still having them (never steady but nevertheless there). I tried to call my doctor at about 10am, but only got a nurse who said to give it time and see what happened because they can happen for up to 24 hours after sex. So I waited and waited til 2pm that afternoon and they were getting worse.
They were getting stronger and hurting and I have a high pain tolerance. (It doesn't hurt to me until it's excruciating and I'm crying.) I called my doctor and actually got to talk to him but he said, OVER THE PHONE, that it was false labor and to just put it out of my mind and go on like they weren't bothering me and they would go away on their own. I got off the phone and laid in bed (or the warm bath tub), toughing it out until I started balling with every contraction at about 6.
My husband made me call the hospital and they finally said that I sounded like I needed to be checked out. So we got my stuff together, took our three year old daughter to the neighbors (she is not biologically mine so I had no clue what labor was about) and headed up there.
The road was blocked because a medical helicopter was landing on the helio pad right next to the road, but the cop let us pass him thank goodness lol.
Finally made our way up to labor and delivery... they checked me and the nurse got this crazy look on her face that seemed to say "holy crap" and then said, "You are dilated to almost a 6... you're gonna have this baby tonight". She had to call the doctor back in from out in town (30 mins away) and said that I wasn't allowed to have pain meds in the mean time because I was so early and didn't want to possibly contribute to any breathing problems that he may already have. So they hooked me up to fluids, made me lay completely flat and then tilted the bed so I was on my head virtually, so that there wouldn't be any pressure on my cervix until the doctor was ready for my to deliver.
She finally got there, checked me (was now a 6-7) and they gave me two drugs to try to stall the labor and called in the NICU team from 2 hours away. They wanted to fly me there to have him there but my labor wouldn't slow down. When they heard the NICU team was close by they went ahead and gave me the epidural I so desperately wanted and our son was born at 11:21pm at 5lbs 3oz (big for only 33 wks). He came out kicking and screaming as soon as his head was delivered so his breathing was ok until about 4 mins old, so they put him on c-pap and he was flown to Loma Linda University Children's a couple of hours later.
I was discharged the next afternoon at 1pm and am proud to say I went home in my jeans without the rubber band (even if they are my fat jeans) and spent the next four weeks driving 2 hours back and forth to go see our amazing son.
