Avera's Birth Story

Submitted by Averal20
So here I was pregnant for the second time and going for a VBAC ... let me start from the beginning ...

My first pregnancy resulted in a C-section. At 39 weeks, I had Cervidil the night before. When I woke up, I was 4 cm and I was rushed to the delivery room. When I got to 10 cm, my son still hadn't drop and I was in so much pain, I had a cold an no meds. My sister delivered without meds so I was going to do the same thing ... my mom also said you have to feel the pain at least once, so I had no meds. It was so much pain, I started cursing out the nurses lol. My ma was sitting across from me saying over and over that when they break your water, it's going to hurt like hell. Then my doc came and broke my water and the pain got worse ... I was going crazy. I couldn't breathe. The contractions were more painful. My son started to go into distress and the pain was unbearable so I requested a C-section. They gave me a spinal tap and my son was born. The pain was over, thank god! ...

So here I was pregnant again almost 2 years later. The doc asked me if I wanted a C-section or a VBAC. I chose VBAC. I felt like a failure because I didn't deliver my son vaginally. So the whole time I was pregnant, I was looking up info about other women's VBACs. I was satisfied with going through with it ... my doc wanted to induce me at 39 weeks. At 36 weeks, I was 1 cm dilated and my baby still didn't drop. At 38 weeks pregnant, I was still 1 cm dilated and my daughter still hadn't dropped. I was going to wait to see if she would come on her own—I wasn't in a rush. So I scheduled to be induced the Monday after my due date.

I was due on a Friday. So here I was, 40 weeks pregnant, still no baby, and still 1 cm dilated—I still hadn't dropped. I got worried ... so I looked up info about the baby dropping an most people said most babies don't drop until labor so I felt a little better but I was still scared. I took a nap and when I woke up, I was leaking. I kept leaking. I got excited because it was time for her to come! I was even excited I was gonna deliver on my due date. My husband took me to the ER and they said my water didn't break, it was probably just her kicking my bladder, so I was sent home. I was leaking the entire weekend, so I looked up leaking fluid. Some people said it was probably just my cervix thinning out. So I was OK.

Monday came and I was going in to be induced. I had to see my doc that morning. I saw the nurse instead because the doc was delivering a baby. The nurse checked my cervix and I was still at 1 cm and the baby still didn't drop. I was so sad. But she said my cervix was changing. Then she gave me paperwork for me to go to the hospital. She told me the hospital had a new policy: VBAC patients no longer got Cervidils, they just got Pitocin the next morning. I was to go in at 8 in the morning. So I went home and looked up VBAC by Pitocin and every VBAC had failed. I was sooo scared.

I went grocery shopping to ease my mind, and to get some walking in. At the store, I felt a gush and went to the restroom—it was nothing. I finished shopping, went home, put the food up, cleaned out the fridge, then went to sleep. I woke up later on and cooked, around 9 PM. The whole time I was cooking, I was in pain. I sat down and ate and I was still in pain, which continued through the night. I figured it was Braxton Hicks contractions so I took some Tylenol and went to sleep. I woke up in pain, went to the bathroom and had my bloody show. I was excited because I had lost my mucus plug. I tried to lay down but I kept having pain so I sat up and slept. I didn't want to go into the hospital because I was supposed to go in at 8 AM and the pain wasn't like it was with my son—I could take it.

By 6 AM, I couldn't take the pain anymore. My husband, my son and I went to the hospital. They admitted me and asked if I wanted an epidural. I said yes after I see how much I dilated. The nurse checked m cervix and I was 8 cm dilated and my water bag was bulging!!!! OMG!!! I couldn't believe it!!!. They told me I couldn't get an epidural nor any pain meds. They were calling my doc to break my water. I started to cry because I couldn't get an epidural and my doc was coming to break my water and the baby was still up high. My husband had to leave to take my son to our mom's house because my son couldn't be in the birthing room.

My doc came and said she's still up too high but he's going to break my water and hopefully she would come down. I was already 10 cm. So he broke my water. I was a -1. He said we will wait and see if she drops. The nurse gave me a bag and a half of fluid because my doc said I could get an epidural once I got all that fluid. I finally got the epidural and relaxed. I was laying there for 10 mins and I felt pressure like I had to push so I called the nurse. She said the baby had come down some more but still had to come down further. 30 mins went by, my doc checked me and I was ready to push.

They poured liquid on me to clean me and they prepped me for delivery. I had to do three 10-sec practice pushes with the nurses. Then my daughter's head was showing so they called the doc back, and I had to stop pushing till he came. The doc finally came. He got dressed and I was pushing for 5 mins. She didn't come, so I had to push harder and the doc had to push on my stomach until finally she was born, @ 12:15, 8 lbs, 8oz. I tore at the top and had to get two stitches. I was so happy! I couldn't believe how good it felt to deliver vaginally. I was so happy and stress-free ... all that worrying was not even needed. I was overworried for no reason. I didn't need to be induced—she came on her own, thank god. So never give up hope because anything is possible.
