Emma's Birth Story

Submitted by andynbritt09
I had been having contractions for two weeks with my daughter. Everything seemed normal apart from the fact I had been diagnosed early on with diabetes. The doctors had kept a very close eye on us, with visits to the office and hospital three times a week. After yet another ultrasound, my OB said they would like to induce labor on Friday (it was Wednesday). So my husband, parents and I arrived at the hospital at 8:00 Friday night. We checked in and were taken to a room to start inducing labor.

The doctor called a radiologist into the room, had me lay on my side, hooked me up to oxygen and started running all kinds of tests. My baby's heartbeat was 60 after it had been perfect two days earlier. I had a fever and my white blood cell count was up, indicating an infection. The radiologist did an ultrasound and discovered I had no amniotic fluid left. I had no idea I had even lost it. They rushed me into surgery after my baby's heart rate dropped even more. I have never been more terrified in my life. My husband was with me the entire time and all we did was pray.

At 12:39 AM, my daughter Emma was delivered, measuring at 5 lb. 3 oz. and 18 1/2 in long. She had had a bowel movement in the birth canal that caused my fever, but thankfully none had entered her system. The doctor later told me that if we hadn't come in for the scheduled induction on Friday night, we would have lost her by Saturday morning.

I count my blessings every day and thank the heavens for each second spent with my precious baby. She is truly my miracle.
