Dieting While Breastfeeding
Is it OK to diet while breastfeeding?
Within reason, yes. During pregnancy the body is preparing for breastfeeding by storing nutrients and energy. It is estimated that an additional 300 to 400 calories a day is needed for milk production, but this varies depending on the current weight of the mother and her weight gain during pregnancy. If the mother's weight for height is above standards, a 4- to 5-pound weight loss per month should not affect the milk supply. Consult your doctor to help you determine if it's appropriate for you.
