Breast Milk Banks

Is it safe to use breast milk from a milk bank?

Absolutely! Breast milk bank donors are carefully screened, the breast milk is pasteurized and there are strict criteria for anyone who donates milk.

Check to see if the bank is affiliated with Human Milk Banking Association of North America, which has strict guidelines for all its members. HMBANA regulates all breast milk donors and excludes women who smoke, drink alcohol or are on medication.

The donated breast milk is cultured to check for bacteria, then heat-treated, and checked again before it's sent out.

For more information, check the HMBANA's Web site.
