What Breastfeeding Feels Like

Breastfeeding, just like childbirth, is different for every mama. It can be a bit uncomfortable in the first few days since it's a new experience, but if the pain persists beyond that, odds are something isn't right and you should consult a lactation consultant. Breastfeeding should feel good, not hurt.

After the initial soreness as your boobs and your babe get used to each other, breastfeeding can actually be quite pleasurable. When your boobs are full of milk, it's a relief to have the milk sucked out of them and have them emptied.

If baby is latched properly, it'll feel like a little tugging motion as he nurses. Again, it can actually feel kinda good, as strange as that sounds.

Some mamas don't feel when their milk lets-down at all. For others, it can feel a bit like pins and needles or like tiny rivers of milk pouring through your ducts towards the nipples.

If you have any soreness or pain when you are breastfeeding, talk to your doc or consult a lactation consultant. Something—like a plugged duct, bad latch or mastitis—might be wrong and you may need meds or help getting baby to latch correctly. Again, breastfeeding shouldn't hurt!
