Medicine Cabinet Essentials for Kids' First Aid and Baby Care
You're like the parent version of MacGyver: You like to be prepared for everything and anything at all times. Here's a list of must-have items to make sure your first aid kit or medicine cabinet is up-to-par so you can handle that fever, burn or flu without batting an eye. Way to go, MomGyver!
- A non-aspirin pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen (the latter for kids 6 months and older)
- Adhesive tape, gauze and scissors
- Bandages—with your kid's favorite character on them, of course!
- An antiseptic and/or first aid antibiotic ointment.
- Cold medicine—consult your doctor before administering cold medication to a young child.
- Arnica gel for bumps and bruises
- Ice and heat packs—make your own ice packs at home or buy a reusable one (like these cool retro ice packs).
- A burn kit
- Thermometers. A digital rectal one for baby care; an ear or regular digital one for older kids. (Avoid the old-fashioned mercury kind.)
- Benadryl
- Teething tablets or Baby Orajel
- Rubbing alcohol to clean off thermometers and tweezers
- Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream for kids' itchy bites and rashes
- Tweezers to get out splinters and ticks
- Kid-friendly insect repellent
- A medicine dropper, oral syringe, or dosing cup or spoon
- An EpiPen for kids with serious allergies
- A nasal aspirator for babies and young toddlers
- Nail scissors or clippers
- Petroleum jelly and/or Aquaphor
- Post the phone numbers for poison control (800-222-1222) and your pediatrician somewhere prominent where everyone will be able to find them.
