Your Newborn's (Not So Perfect) Head
Congratulations! You just gave birth to a beautiful baby! Whoo hoo! You'll probably be so in love that you won't notice any of his imperfections, but if you are stressed about the appearance of your newborn baby's head, read on!
Babies don't pop out looking like Baby Gap models. It's totally normal for them to be a little funny looking. So if your baby's head has some of the following characteristics, know it's totally normal:
- After traveling through the birth canal, newborn babies' heads are often squished—they may look like cone heads!
- You've probably heard that you have to be super careful with a newborn's head because of the fontanels (or soft spots). The fontanels might bulge a little when your baby cries. Looks weird, but it's totally normal.
- Newborn babies sometimes look like they have dandruff—it's called cradle cap and it's just peeling skin so don't break out the Selsun Blue!
- Your newborn's head may be a little lumpy—or even bruised after labor. No surprise really after all it has been through!
