Baby Physical Development: Newborns' (Not So Perfect) Eyes

What new mother doesn't want to look into her newborn baby's eyes and bond? You're hoping he'll look right at you and somehow acknowledge that you're his mom. But wait—what's up with his eyes? They're pretty freaky looking. Not to worry. Here are a few of the (totally normal) characteristics of this stage of baby's physical development:
  • Although your newborn can see you, he probably can't focus very well—so don't be surprised if his eyes seem out of focus or crossed.
  • Your newborn's eyelids are probably a little bit swollen—so don't be surprised if he can't fully open his eyes. Notice how if you hold him upright, he'll open his eyes wider (just like a doll!).
  • Sometimes after delivery, a newborn baby's eyes look red or have red spots. That should clear up in a few days.
Who really cares if your newborn baby's eyes don't look just right. To you, they're beautiful! So go ahead and bond. There's nothing better than looking in your newborn baby's eyes.
