Disciplining a one year old?

My daughter is 13 months old. She may be the easiest baby in the world. Easy going and almost always happy, and has been since the day she was born. Of course she does things from time to time that I dont want her to do. For example: the other day when we were at a restaurant and she threw pieces of her food on the floor. Anyways I am wondering how much I am supposed to expect a one year old to understand? I know they have very short memory and that I will have to reminder her several times. Is there any other form of discipline I should be enforcing so that she understands throwing her food on the floor in not ok?
