Baby Feeding: Diarrhea & Sugar Water
Should I give sugar water to a baby with diarrhea?
You're better off giving your child an oral electrolyte solution (like Equalyte or Pedialyte). Yes, our mothers and grandmothers fed us ginger ale, juice and sugar water when we had belly aches, but doctors don't recommend those options anymore. Why? Because they are low in salt and high in sugar, a combination that actually exacerbates the diarrhea. Fruit juices tend to have a laxative effect (not exactly a great way to stop diarrhea) and soda with caffeine, a diuretic, can be dehydrating.
