Germs, Kids and Colds

Remember that crazy germophobe substitute teacher you had in middle school who brandished her can of Lysol every five minutes? Well, let's not be her. But we certainly won't call you nuts if you want to do something about the air in your baby's nursery to help prevent and soothe illness.

Here are some tips to try:

  • You'll want to keep the temperature comfortable in the nursery. Baby's room shouldn't require you to wear a hat, scarf and gloves or a bikini. (If you've given birth recently, you're probably not ready to get back into one of those yet, anyway, so all the more reason to keep tabs on the thermostat.)
  • Consider humidity. A humidifier can add moisture to the air when your heater is on, or when baby is battling congestion. Crane makes adorable kid-friendly humidifiers you probably won't be able to resist.
  • If allergies run in the family, consider spending the extra cash on a HEPA vacuum and an air purifier. And don't forget to change the filter in your home's air vents every three months.

  • Of course, you won't be able to prevent every cold you're baby's going to get, but you'll both rest a little more comfortably knowing that you're armed a little better for the germ wars.
