Fevers and Antibiotics

Remember: Your doctor will not prescribe an antibiotic to treat your child's fever unless there is an underlying infection that needs treatment.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the majority of children suffering from fevers have nonbacterial (viral) upper respiratory infections that don't require antibiotics. Your first line of defense against a fever should be a child-appropriate dosage of relief medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
