Babyproofing Stairs
The stairs—great for giving you a perky tush, but a definite hazard for young kids and babies. Here are some easy ways to start babyproofing and keep your kid safe on the steps:
- Install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. Unfortunately, pressure-mount gates (you know, the ones that don't destroy your paint job) can be pushed forward and aren't a safe option for the top of a stairwell so use a wall-mount gate up there. Also, try to find gates that you can open with one hand so you can work 'em when you're carrying a zillion things (which is always, right?).
- Keep your stairs free of clutter so you and your babe don't slip on something.
- Teach your kid how to use the stairs safely and never let him walk up or down 'em while holding something in his hands. And when he whines and says you carry things (including him) on the stairs all the time, bust out your mean mommy "Do as I say, not as I do" routine.
