Kids Food Safety: Local vs. Imported Produce
Is local produce safer than imported when it comes to contamination with bacteria?
Not necessarily. There have been outbreaks of food-borne illness associated with imported fruits and vegetables in the past, but because of this, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration now conduct vigorous testing to ensure food safety, especially for kids. Much imported fresh produce is closely inspected and analyzed for bacterial contamination before it's released into the U.S. market.
