Child Safety: Carpet Cleaning

Before your baby came along, your pristine carpet pretty much stayed that way (except for that unfortunate incident with the fire-engine red nail polish, but your secret's safe with us). Since your baby's arrival, however, you're starting to notice unidentifiable splotches. Needless to say, the weekly once-over with the vacuum just won't cut it anymore.

Before reaching for the industrial stuff to get your carpet looking new again, try some safe and eco-friendly cleaning tips. After all, you're little one practically lives with his face 8 inches from that carpet—and sometimes his face is positively buried in it.

Everyday products, like salt, club soda, baking powder, cornstarch, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide can be effective carpet stain and odor cleaners. The Green Guide tells you how to use them and offers additional tips on green carpet cleaning.

If everyday solutions aren't cutting it, look for cleaning products that are labeled "nontoxic" to get those rugs clean. Check out BabyGanics, designed specifically for families with children, and Method, the "people against dirty" products.

For bigger jobs, check your local phone book for "baby safe carpet cleaners." These companies specialize in homes with children and child safety and can often leave your carpet clean, dry and (bonus!) ready to be crawled on the moment they walk out the door.

Now, next time you and your baby are taking a playful spin on the floor, you'll feel protected (no harsh chemicals) and less worried (what's a little mashed banana when you know it'll come out!).
