BPA-Free Kids' Gear
BPA, a chemical in many plastics, has gotten quite the bad rap recently. But while the jury is still out on exactly what damage the toxin (full name: bisphenol-A) can cause, it's probably better to be safer than sorrier. Plastic is everywhere—especially when it comes to kid stuff. Fortunately, not all plastic products contain BPA. So read labels carefully. And if you want give BPA the big heave-ho from your life, check out these cool kid products that are completely BPA-free.
- Some worry that BPA can leak out of plastic baby bottles and into you child's milk or formula so instead opt for the BPA-free Born Free bottles or go old school and get glass bottles.
- Many kid's toys are made of plastic so it's easy to freak out every time your kid jams Dora in her mouth (which is all the time), but breathe easy because kid's toy companies have been on the BPA-free bandwagon for awhile now. Most of the toys your kids want (and have) are already BPA-free. When shopping for new toys, read labels carefully and do your research-- there are lots of BPA-free options out there. Check out brands like Lamaze and Skip Hop that sell tons of BPA-free toys.
- Teething toys spend more time in your kid's mouth than anything else (except for maybe your boob, for those who are breastfeeding). Keep several BPA-free teething rings on hand or pick up a set of Nuby hard and soft teethers.
- Even your kid's hot 'n steamy bathwater can lead to BPA leaching from plastic bath toys. Keep bath time toxin-free by picking up some BPA-free bath toys and storing them in the BPA-free Tubby bath toy organizer. You can even protect your kid's noggin with the BPA-free Moby bath spout cover.
- Want to avoid a layer of BPA with your kid's Mac & Cheese? Try serving food in Bamboo bowls, a BPA-free plastic plate or pick up some metal camp dishes. If your kid loves dipping, try Skip Hop's palette plate that has cute, small compartments for serving up dips and sauces — but no BPA.
- Kids wipes are stored in plastic containers, which means (you guessed it!), they're also vulnerable to BPA leakage. Try the BPA-free swipe wipes holder which also happens to be super cute, compact and convenient.
- Have cupboards full of plastic food containers? You might consider tossing them, and opt for BPA-free Funtainers, a safer way to store your kid's lunch and leftovers
- Stop buying bottled water (for the environment's sake, too!) and carry your own H20 in Klean Kanteen bottles or Foogo straw bottles.
- Brighten your kid's room (and protect your white shag carpet from purple crayon) with adorable and functional BPA-free Playspot floor tiles.
- If you want to erase all doubt of BPA making its way into your bottles and sippy cups, dry them on a BPA-free drying racklike a stainless steel drying rack or the Skip Hop Splash.
- Worried that your baby's comb may somehow make its way into his mouth (like um, everything he can get his hands on)? You can even get a BPA-free Hare comb and brush set.
- Most pacifiers are made from BPA-free latex or silicone, but read the labels to be sure. Need some new ones? Avent just released a line of BPA-Free Pacis and Zoe Pacis are all BPA-free. Also, check out this cool BPA-free Paci Pod for safe (and stylish) paci storage. The things you never knew you needed until you had a baby, huh?
