Product Recalls: Drop-Side Cribs by Evenflo, Delta and Others

2.2 Million Drop-Side Cribs Recalled to Improve Infant Safety—Replacement Kits Available in Most Cases.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced a voluntary recall of more than two million drop-side cribs manufactured by Evenflo, Delta, Jardine, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby, Simmons and Child Craft. (Earlier this year, Graco, Simplicity and C&T/Sorelle also voluntarily recalled their drop-side cribs.)

The crib hardware on drop-side cribs can break or fail, causing infants and toddlers to fall out of the crib or become entwined in mattresses. CPSC staff has determined drop-side cribs are usually less structurally sound than cribs with four fixed sides.

All of the cribs involved in this recall were manufactured between 2000 and 2009. Parents who own a crib by one of these manufacturers should visit the following links for specific model numbers of the affected cribs and for information on obtaining important replacement kits. The parts and directions in these kits will allow parents to immobilize the drop-sides of the cribs, making them more safe.

Parents should stop using these recalled cribs immediately. While awaiting delivery of the repair kit, the CPSC urges parents and caregivers to find an alternative, safe crib for their babies. However, if your crib's drop-side hardware is damaged or broken, repair kits are not a safe solution. Instead, contact the manufacturer for an alternative remedy for making your crib safe for your baby.

Additionally, drop-side cribs manufactured by Child Craft, a company now out of business, have been recalled but cannot be fixed. Parents should stop using these cribs immediately. Foundations Worldwide has agreed to provide Child Craft owners with a rebate towards the purchase of a new, fixed-side crib manufactured by Foundations Worldwide Inc. For information on obtaining this rebate, visit www.cribsafetyinfo.com.

Since 2007, about nine million drop-side cribs have been recalled due to incidents of injury, or worse. Be sure to check your crib brand and label against any CPSC crib recalls.
