Kids' Eating: Brainy Breakfast Ideas

A healthy breakfast can do more than just ward off midmorning meltdowns. In fact, the right foods can actually boost your kid's ability to think.

Fiber-packed whole grains and fruits give the brain a steady supply of glucose, while protein-rich eggs and nuts help your kid feel fuller longer. Ground flax seed provides healthy omega-3 fatty acids and eating berries can actually improve your kid's memory. (So much for the "I forgot my homework" excuse!)

Starting the day with brain-boosting foods can help your kids focus better on learning—whether it's finding a solution to global warming…or learning the ABC's.

Get your kid off to a great start by trying one of these smart breakfast options:

  • Whole wheat bagels topped with low-fat cream cheese and chopped fruit.
  • Apple slices dipped in almond butter.
  • Ice Berry Smoothies or another berry-loaded breakfast drink.
  • Whole grain fiber cereals.
  • Low-fat yogurt with nuts and fruit. Make it fun by letting your kids build their own Fruit and Yogurt Breakfast Cups.
  • Whole-grain toast with peanut butter
  • Oatmeal with nuts, dried fruit or berries. How about a bowl of Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal
  • Breakfast burritos. Make-Ahead Breakfast Burritos are great for busy mornings.
  • Multi-grain toaster waffles topped with vanilla yogurt and strawberries.
  • Pancakes, waffles or muffins with ground flax seed. Try our do-it-yourself Multigrain Pancakes With Flax.
  • Scrambled eggs loaded with chopped veggies.
  • Whole wheat English muffins with melted cheese.
  • Not only are these brainy breakfasts delicious, they'll keep your little "smarty-pants" focused all morning long.
