Childhood Illnesses: Melanoma

Submitted by Juggamommy
Ok I read that it could happen. But like you hear all the time: I never though it could happen to my child. Belly Bean (Isabella) will be 8 in just a few short weeks. On the 23rd of this month she will be undergoing surgery to remove a congenital nevi (birth mark you are born with, not one that develops over time) that has turned into melanoma. This is one of every parent's worst nightmares. My child has cancer. And it is one of the most deadliest kinds.
I have done some research and have found out that granted there is a family history of melanoma, children born with this type of birthmark have extremely high incidences of developing melanoma upon hitting puberty. Bella is only going on 8 but, like me, has started going through it quite young. (I was 8 when I started my period.) We are scared, but know that the total removal of this birthmark might just save our little girl.

Has anyone else had a mole or birthmark in a noticeable place removed? (Hers is on her forehead close to the hairline.) Or has your child? How was the healing process? And did you use anything like Mederma? Just trying to look to the future, and give other parents a possible heads up to get their children checked for this dreadful childhood illness.
