Keep Kids From Catching Colds

How can I keep my kid from catching colds?

While there are some things you can do to try to keep your kid from getting sick, it's hard to prevent all colds from infecting your family. Children typically get three to ten colds a year; usually the first year a child enters school, whether preschool or kindergarten, is the worst. Here are some tips for staying healthy during the cold and flu season:
  • Frequent and thorough hand-washing
  • Getting the flu shot
  • Avoiding sick people
  • Bolstering the immune system by eating healthy, exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep
Keep in mind that natural remedies that adults may use (such as zinc or echinacea) may not be safe or effective for children. Be sure to talk with your pediatrician before giving your child any cold medicines or homeopathic/herbal remedies.

The good news is that getting colds helps kids build up their immune systems. For every year that your child is in school, he will probably have fewer and fewer colds.
