Josie Bissett on Co-Sleeping With Her Big Kids

Submitted by Josie Bissett
One of the things I am dealing with right now is how to get my kids sleeping in their own beds.
I am a single mom and my kids have been sleeping with me since my divorce three years ago. They were much smaller then, and now at ages 9 and 7, it's getting a bit tight. So, I've successfully booted Mason, my 9-year-old, out and onto a blow-up mattress at the side of my bed. But Princess Maya still gets to sleep next to me.
Personally, I like to sleep vertically, but Maya prefers sleeping horizontally, with her feet karate-chopping me all night long. Here's the thing ... I just can't do it anymore!
After talking it through together, this is what we came up with and it seems to be working so far! Yay! My kids sleep together in my son's room. Mason sleeps in his bed and Maya sleeps on his trundle. I let them leave their lava lamps on for a little distraction and light.
I am not saying that they make it through the night. Nope, not at all. They make their way into my bed in the middle of the night, but I think we are on the right track. Baby steps. I figure when they are older and way too big, I will long for the nights that they wanted to be snuggled up next to me.
Besides being a mom, Josie Bissett is an actress who can currently be seen on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She is also the author of the children's book Tickle Monster, which is available for purchase at Josiebissett.com.
