Kids With Special Needs: Socializing With Autistic Schoolmates
How do I help my grade schooler socialize with an autistic schoolmate?
First, help your child understand autism. The Autism Society of America offers a very useful (and kid-friendly) guide called Growing Up Together, which talks about autism and how to become friends with someone who has the disorder.
Second, speak to your child's teachers. Ask how the school is working to build an accepting community for kids with special needs and how you should support those efforts at home.
Third, the child with autism at your kid's school isn't the only person with a disability your child ever will encounter. So create opportunities for your child to spend time with, and learn from, people with disabilities outside of school.
