10-Year-Old Gives Birth
How to talk to YOUR preteen about sex.
It seems everyone's talking about the hyper-sexualization (perceived or real) of today's kids. From Taylor Momsen to Miley Cyrus, as a parent, it's hard to escape the message of the masses—today's kids are too sexy.
As if scantily clad teen girls weren't enough to alarm you, in 2010 there were reports of a 10-year-old girl giving birth in Spain. And the father? He was 13.
The girl, a Romanian, gave birth at a hospital after reportedly failing to receive prenatal care during her pregnancy. According to the girl's mother, it's not all that uncommon for Roma children (Romanian Gypsies) to marry and have children at a young age. Spanish social workers have inspected her home to ensure the baby is being cared for.
So what's it all add up to? We're not sure, but news like this always leaves us reeling a little (and heading to the Children's Place to buy turtlenecks and loose-fitting sweatpants!). And shock value aside, we feel like there's a learning opportunity here. And we're asking ourselves: So how do I talk to my preteen about sex?
Our preteen health expert, Dr. Elizabeth Alderman, has some tips. Among them, "Spot teachable moments." We're taking this as our cue! Get the rest of Dr. Alderman's tips!
