Your Kid's High Attention Span

Attention span in children is variable depending on age. A kid's normal attention span is three to five minutes for every year of age. In other words, a 2-year-old should be able to concentrate for at least six minutes and a 5-year-old should be able to focus for 15 minutes. If your kid can pay attention longer than that, lucky you! You won the jackpot!

Seriously, being able to concentrate and having a long attention span will serve your kid well in school—and in life. Now if only YOU had an attention span that long. Not an easy thing when you're getting interrupted every five minutes ...

Kids with high attention spans tend to get fully absorbed in whatever it is they're doing. They also tend to be able to entertain themselves for long periods. That's all good stuff! The only problem is when you want your kid to stop reading/building with Lego/painting and he is so immersed in his project that he doesn't want take a break.

Sure, having a kid with a super-long attention span can be annoying in those cases. But for the most part, having a high attention span will serve your kid well. Once your kid starts a project chances are good that he'll finish it. Hopefully, that includes cleaning his room!
