Child Behavior: Your High-Energy Child

Is your kid constantly moving? Do you sometimes wonder if the term "bouncing off the walls" was coined to describe her? Then you probably have what's called a high-energy kid. Don't worry: High-energy kids are great—as long as you know how to channel all of that energy!

Here are some child behavior tips for parenting a high-energy kid:
  • Get her moving: Preferably outside the house! Sign her up for a team sport or get her to the playground or the park so she can run out her batteries.
  • Watch what she eats: Some studies have shown that artificial food dyes could contribute to hyperactivity and ADHD in kids. Ditto for sugar and caffeine. Even if she's not drinking Starbucks yet, she might be getting a jolt from cola and chocolate.
  • Turn off the TV: Watching TV and playing with video games and electronic toys can overstimulate kids—especially right before bedtime!
  • Set limits: Tell her she's got to have some quiet time to herself. Even if she plays in her room, having time alone will hopefully help her chill out a bit—and at least it will give you a break!
