Nanny 911: Getting Children to Listen
I have five kids, ages 2, 3, 5, 7 and 12, whom I have to ask multiple times to get them to do anything, and then they don't do a very good job of it. What can I do to make them respect me more and get their daily tasks done?
Make sure your expectations are not too high, especially for the little ones. Pick your battles and try to make these things fun, like a group activity or a game: How many toys can they pick up? Rotate who gets to set the table, who gets to clear it! Reward with lots of praise and let go of some of the perfection! If you keep it positive, they will want to do it more.
Asking multiple times turns into nagging and no one wants that! Make sure you tell them you only ask twice and after that they will lose a privilege (one that would be earned by doing the chore, like TV time). But please remember to pick your battles carefully!
